Important information about accessibility in our venue.

Spectrum Theatre strives to be as inclusive a theatre as possible – but unfortunately, due to being located in a heritage-listed building with limited space, this presents us with limitations that we need our members and patrons to be aware of.

Where we can, of course, we will always do what we can to make sure everybody within our venue is comfortable and assisted!

ACROD Parking

There are parking bays available outside of Spectrum Theatre, however, there are no ACROD parking bays outside of the theatre, and these are for general use (the parking and designation of ACROD parking bays at Proudlove Parade is out of our control).

However, should you need a parking bay outside of the theatre, please contact us and we will try to reserve a bay for you. Unfortunately, as these bays are in use by the general public as well as our patrons, we cannot guarantee their availability.

Accessible Seating

Our auditorium is on levels that may provide challenges for folk that use wheelchairs, or have trouble going up stairs. As such, the first level of the auditorium is reserved exclusively for those with accessibility requirements (and their companions if available), and are available upon request at Paperbark Merchants (our ticketing provider).

If the accessible seating is not reserved when the tickets were bought and you require it, we will of course try to accommodate you in the reserved seating if possible. But to avoid disappointment, we suggest going into Paperbark Merchants or contacting them via phone on (08) 9842 8044.

Toilet Facilities

Spectrum Theatre shares its toilet facilities with the University of Western Australia upstairs. Located on the ground floor, there are two toilet rooms, one containing a urinal, toilet (enclosed in a stall) and sink; and a second one that contains a toilet (enclosed in a stall) and sink.

The toilet rooms themselves have limited space, and no accessible hand-rails. The toilet stall in the room with the urinal is more spacious, but the door may not be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walking apparatus.

Spectrum Theatre is looking into available options to make our toilets more accessibility-friendly, and this will have to be undertaken in conjunction with the University of Western Australia, and the City of Albany who own the building. As such, we cannot make any guarantees.

The nearest accessible toilets are located on Proudlove Parade, across the carpark from the theatre, on the opposite side of the road to the TransWA station. (Link on Google Maps). However, as we do not manage these facilities, we cannot guarantee when they are open.

Content Warnings

Spectrum Theatre is committed to providing relevant content warnings when necessary, to ensure that nobody has an unpleasant experience. Such content may include graphic references, acts, loud or sudden noises, and strobe light effects.

If you are concerned about potential content that may be distressing in a production that you’re interested in seeing, please email us at spectrumtheatrewa@outlook.com for clarification.

For Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities

Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to provide captioned or sign-language performances, hearing loops, infrared hearing systems, or similar devices. If we can find a way to do this in the future, it is certainly something we would love to do.

Theatre participation

Spectrum Theatre has worked with performers and crew that have additional accessibility needs, but unfortunately, due to the small space available in a heritage-listed building, we are confined in what we are able to provide in way of accessibility to the stage. Access to the stage from both the green room and the dressing room is via stairs and through relatively tight corners and frames. The stage is also accessed from the auditorium via stairs.

Similarly, our bio box is a small room, once again accessed via stairs from the kitchen area.

However, if there are feasible ways around the challenges our space provides to ensure participation, Spectrum Theatre will do whatever it can, within our limitations our space provides, to make that happen!
